Historical Background

Sometime in 1990, deciding to depart from its traditional food aid assistance program, the Conference undertook an ambitious and bold step towards the setting-up of Rumah Keluarga Kami (RKK), a shelter for the underprivileged, abandoned, abused and marginalised children in and around the District of Hulu Langat. The initial years, saw the works of the Conference centred towards identifying the poor and less fortunate in surrounding areas in Hulu Langat and in particular within the Kajang town vicinity. This also included rural areas and surrounding rubber estates within a 10-to-15-mile radius of Kajang.

Recognising that the continued provision of monthly rations and cash aid did not do much to enhance the quality of life of our FINS, including their future generations, in the main, due to the vicious poverty circle they are entrapped in, the members recognized that the best solution was to get the younger generation out of this vicious poverty circle through education.

Toward this end, Rumah Keluarga Kami (RKK) opened its doors on 1st June 1990, operating initially from a rented corner two-storey property in Taman Bukit, Kajang. To accommodate the increase in the number of children seeking admission to the Home, the Conference acquired a single-storey bungalow in Taman Bukit, Kajang that could accommodate twenty-five children bearing in mind the need to ensure the safety and security of the residents. Thereafter, the Conference rented two semi-detached single-storey houses affronting the existing premises solely for the boys which could accommodate 15 boys.

In 2013, the Conference acquired a vacant plot of land situated at the rear of the existing premises at a cost of RM300,000.00 and in late 2015 completed the building of a three-storey building costing RM1.053 million on the said plot of land. The new premises can accommodate up to 60 children including “stay-in” house mothers and wardens. After obtaining the requisite approvals from the relevant agencies, the children moved into our new premises in December 2015.

The construction cost of the new building together with all its internal fixtures and fittings were funded by the spontaneous generosity of Malaysians, the State Government of Selangor, the Malaysian Government, the Japanese Government, Vincentians from Malaysia and Singapore, Corporates, and Parishioners from the Church of the Holy Family, Kajang.

In July 2008, the Conference undertook a second challenging project by setting up an all-male Home for ex-criminal offenders, parolees, and adults from correctional institutions named as Second Chance Community Home (SCCH).
