RUMAH KELUARGA KAMI (RKK)

RKK’s primary goal is to not only provide the children in the Home with their material wants, but to also build sound character and to ensure that every child secures adequate educational qualifications. As such, it is compulsory for all children residing at the Home to attend a school or is enrolled in an educational institution.

It is gratifying to note that with the Home’s encouragement and support, several of our children have successfully progressed beyond secondary school education by continuing with their tertiary education, particularly in recent years. These include their successful completion of Diploma and/or Degree courses at institutions of higher learning or vocational institutions.

Academic Achievements

The children of RKK are currently pursuing courses at various institutions of higher learning as listed below. The Home continues to support them financially to enable them to continue their studies.

Testimonies from Past Residents

Dharshana Punitha Morthy

RKK was my Home for ten of my growing up years. This was my Home where my entire childhood and adolescent life was spent.

As my mother was a single parent she had to work to support me and my sister who was a single mother. However, due to poor health and old age, she had to stop working. My elder single mother sister had to then take on a job to support the family and her child. I was referred to RKK in December 2003 and became one of the many other children residing in RKK. The following year, I started my primary education at Jalan Bukit, Kajang. Thereafter, I never looked back as my entire childhood turned to be an eventful and fruitful experience.

Together with my brothers and sisters at RKK, we were provided with our material needs. Most important was the opportunity for all children to complete their secondary education. We were also provided with tuition classes by both paid and voluntary teachers. We also had the opportunity to attend events and functions organized by the Home and generous donors. We were never deprived of material things which included the five meals a day. It was altogether a new experience although I very often missed my mother, sister and nephew.

The best part of my stay in the home was during festivals whereas the children enjoyed decorating the home. As a child coming from an underprivileged family, this was indeed a blessing for me. RKK was a place full of love, kindness and opportunities. The foremost objective of RKK besides providing material things was education. Most importantly, it opened my eyes to several opportunities for a future. This is when I decided to pursue a degree upon completing my SPM. As I am only an average student, I decided to give my best and with the support of the uncles and aunties from RKK, hard work and encouragement from the tuition teachers I managed to do well and obtained 6As in the SPM exams.

After completing my SPM, I took a short break and left RKK at the age of 18 to assist with the families’ finances. However after a year, with the encouragement and financial support from RKK, I was successful in securing a place at Saito College, Petaling Jaya where I completed the Diploma in Law Enforcement and Administration with a CGPA of 3.67. However my thirst to continue my education continued. With the encouragement of the Uncles and Aunties at RKK, I made several attempts to apply to Universities that would provide me with a scholarship.

Eventually, I received a full scholarship from Heriot-Watt University (UK), Malaysia Campus. I am currently in my Second Year of a Bachelor’s Degree Course in Psychology. RKK continues to provide financial assistance for my hostel rental and living expenses. The members closely monitor my academic progress by reviewing my semester results. I am as such thankful to RKK, who still continue to support and encourage me to achieve my ultimate goal which is to obtain a Degree in Psychology. It is a subject which I enjoy studying. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the members of the Conference of Holy Family who continue to shower so much care, love and concern. I shall always have fond memories of how you nurtured me to choose the right path in our lives.

Devika Jennifer

My name is Devika Jennifer. Most people call me Devika. I am 18 years old and my hobby is making creative things. My favourite game is kabaddi. For those of you who do not know, this game is played outdoors by six persons to a team and is played in a court, almost the size of a badminton court. The game originated in India.

I was enrolled in Rumah Keluarga Kami (RKK) when I was 14 years old as my parents could not afford to send me to school. With the encouragement of the Uncles and Aunties who managed RKK, I completed my Form 5 in SMK, Jalan Bukit, Kajang. I am indeed thankful to RKK for providing all the facilities such as tuition, motivational talks, and other activities in the home. Together with my other friends in RKK, we also were privileged to be visited by several university students as part of their CSR programs.

The home did their best to provide us all with good and healthy meals every day which sometimes was cooked personally by the members. We also received pocket allowances and also transport to school was provided in the Home’s own van. On behalf of all the children in the home, I wish to thank uncle John Soma and uncle Andrew for driving us and taking care of all the children during our journey to school as well as for our outings.

I would also like to thank the caregivers and staff in RKK for taking good care of me, whenever I was unwell. They also helped me in buying things for my project work and extra books when required. I did not have a feeling that I am different from other children, because RKK has given me all the facilities and care which other children get in their homes from their parents.

At the moment I am a student at UCSI University which was arranged by the members of the RKK. I am proud to be doing a foundation in Arts. I am on a scholarship, but RKK continues to give me a monthly allowance for my daily expenses every month. I am also allowed to come and stay at home sometimes at the weekend.

Lastly, I am very thankful to Rumah Keluarga Kami (RKK), for helping me to further my education. I hope to one day be a successful businesswoman.

Goveen Kumar

I am Goveen Kumar, 24 yrs old.I am an ex student who has graduated from Rumah Keluarga Kami.

I was welcomed to Rumah Keluarga Kami when I was age 14 years in 2008. My mother was a single mother and she couldn't afford to provide shelter and proper education. The members of RKK decided to give me the privilege to stay here and pursue my educations.

They supported me by providing me with food and shelter. This helped me to achieve my dream to become a Chef. I was supported in co-curriculum activities and soft skills as well. I have graduated with a Diploma in Culinary Arts from Nilai University in the year 2015. I have worked as a Chef in many places. However at present, due to a motor accident, whereby I have to rest my shoulder bones. I am happily working in online food delivery (Foodpanda) as Customer Service. The members of RKK have been parents to me and have advised me a lot. Yet they never neglected to advised me to plan wisely for my future.

I am also proud to have been introduced into the Catholic faith and have a member of Rumah Keluarga Kami to be my Godparent today! He was always there to guide me in building and strengthing my faith. I am indebted to Rumah Keluarga Kami for having me to what I am today - a disciplined and successful person. Thank You
