SECOND CHANCE COMMUNITY HOME (SCCH)

SECOND CHANCE COMMUNITY HOME (SCCH) completed eleven years of operations in December 2020.

The Home continues to grow, notwithstanding its several challenges to provide the residents with a sense of dignity and respect. It provides residents clean and healthy quarters, food, work therapy, leisure time activities, group and individual counselling, spiritual direction and material resources necessary for their personal needs. More importantly, the residents are given the opportunity to develop their spiritual and personal relationships with God.

In order to help the residents to better integrate into society, SCCH also seeks employment opportunities with potential employers who show concern and are sympathetic to our cause by providing employment and assistance to residents with various addictions, particularly drugs, alcohol and gambling. Towards this end, residents are periodically engaged in various projects on an ad hoc basis like shifting of houses/offices, spring cleaning, grass cutting, painting, air-conditioning repairs and plumbing works etc.

A significant area is the rehabilitation, aftercare, reconciliation and re-establishment of family ties of the residents. This often involves the protracted and arduous task of locating long lost relatives.

The year 2020 saw SCCH involved in fewer projects because of the Movement Control Order. Works undertaken by SCCH include painting, house/office cleaning, grass cutting, plumbing works etc. for which market rate remunerations were received.

Apart from the above, the residents were also actively involved with various full/part-time odd jobs for SVP Conferences, Church organisations, individuals and corporations. These services in the main are for maintenance, clearing works, shifting, transport services etc. for which market rate remunerations are received.

SCCH works closely with the Prison Resettlement unit of the Kajang Prison through outreach for discharged prisoners for job placement and periodical provision of used clothing. During the Covid 19 pandemic, SCCH has also assisted in sourcing and contributing PPE, face masks and disinfectant soaps for the use of Prison staff.

SCCH Lorry Project

The lorry project continues to provide opportunities for the residents to undertake more cleaning and other transport-related work including re-cycling activities. Additionally, it is hoped that residents can be trained to obtain “Goods Delivery Licence” (GDL licence) in particular for residents who possess driving licences and are able to drive.

Following the success of the above project, SCCH has secured the donation of a second lorry from the Yayasan Nanyang Press Foundation, with a view to enhancing the said project.

Self-Development and Empowerment of Residents

Over the years SCCH’s main emphasis has been more towards skills training and self-empowerment of the residents which require specialised counselling. As such residents were referred to other appropriate centres where their particular personal problems and needs can be addressed to ensure that appropriate counselling/material support is provided.

Future Plans 2021

  1. To engage with new partners to support the works of SCCH, including financial support through awareness of the works and programs of SCCH to the public, churches and other organisations in the Klang Valley.

  2. To promote SCCH’s lorry transportation service for home/office shifting services and the collection and sale of recyclable items.
